Kaweah Delta Health Care District has selected its next class of resident physicians for its emergency medicine and family medicine programs and its first class of psychiatry residents.
From September through February, Kaweah Delta received more than 1,400 applications to the residency programs and interviewed approximately 300 of the applicants for the 16 available training slots. Resident physicians (or residents) have earned medical (M.D. or D.O.) degrees after four years in medical school. They are then in “residency,” training for an additional three to five years to complete their education in the art and science of medicine and become specialists in their chosen field.
The following resident physicians were chosen to begin Kaweah Delta’s programs:
- Emergency Medicine – Sean Andrews, DO, Western University of Health Sciences; David Denson, MD, Medical College of Wisconsin; Tam Le, MD, Chicago Medical School; Rosalind Franklin, University of Medicine and Science; Phyllis Cowan, DO, Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine of Midwestern University; Erik Miguel, DO, A.T. Still University; and Kunal Sukhija, MD, UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine.
- Family Medicine – Desta Ellis, MD, Escuela Lationoamericana de Medicina; Aisha Hanif, MD, Ross University; Uzma Qureshi, MD, Dow Medical College; Pouria Sadeghi, MD, Saba University; Adesina Sanni, MD, Obafemi Awolowo College; and Tehniyat Shorish, MD, King Edward Medical College.
- Psychiatry – Kingwai Lui, DO, Western University of Health Sciences; Gagandeep Randhawa, MD, Government Medical College of Amritsar; Kamaldeep Sandhu, MD, St. George’s University; and Michael Serna, MD, Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara.
Resident physicians will begin orientation at the end of June, before starting their rotations at the district. They will join the six family medicine residents and six emergency medicine residents already at Kaweah Delta, who this year enter their second year of training.
When they are not caring for patients, resident physicians will train inside Kaweah Delta’s Margaret Foley Graduate Medical Education Center. The center houses offices, classrooms, conference rooms and a lounge, and opens up into a newly expanded Lynn Havard Mirviss Education Center, where resident physicians can be observed training on SimMan, a portable and advanced patient simulator that challenges and tests clinical and decision-making skills during realistic patient care scenarios.
Next year, Kaweah Delta will add a Transitional Year Residency Program. In following years it will add a General Surgery Residency Program.
